11 Mobile Web Annoyances (And How to Fix Them)

Fitting the Web onto your smartphone can be frustrating when ads, video, and 'back' buttons don't cooperate. Here are 11 mobile Web annoyances and how to fix them.

If the future of the Internet is mobile, it'll be riddled with just as many nags and nuisances as the Internet of desktop computers. Websites now clamor to create mobile versions of themselves, forcing bite-sized samples upon smartphone users who want nothing more than the whole Internet in their pockets. The very idea of mobile Web browsing on small touchscreens is so new that we're far from seeing perfection; even the desktop Internet is loaded with annoyances, and it's been around for decades. Until we live in a perfect world, here are 11 mobile Web annoyances, and how to work around, cope with, ignore, or fix them.

Lame Mobile Sites

ESPN's mobile site.Mobile phone users aren't primitive. Our devices may be tiny, but that doesn't mean we seek a lesser experience from the Internet. So why do some Websites exclude or bury features that are found on their PC counterparts? Hey ESPN, just because I'm visiting you on my iPhone's mobile Web browser doesn't mean I don't want to read page 2, get personalized headlines, or even see story photos. Annoyance within annoyance: the standard mobile site for every blog that uses Wordpress. No photos, comment counts, or full stories from the home page? No thanks.

The Fix: The first option is to check the bottom of whatever page you're on. If you're lucky, you'll see an option to switch to the full Website. Otherwise, browse as if you were on your desktop: On the iPhone, Atomic Web Browser lets you identify the browser as Firefox, Internet Explorer, or desktop Safari, and the Dolphin browser on Android lets you identify as a desktop as well. You'll never see another mobile Website again.
New Browser Windows

Just like mobile Websites, mobile browsers wrongly assume you'd sacrifice functionality for more screen real estate, so the standard browsers for Android and iPhone use windows, not tabs. Switching windows or opening new ones takes the focus away from what you were doing, almost defeating the purpose of having new windows in the first place.

The Fix: Get a different browser. On the iPhone, Atomic Web Browser and iCab Mobile allow tabbed browsing, and Dolphin Browser does it on Android. Opera Mini, supported by multiple mobile platforms, supports browser tabs as well.

Built-In Pop-Up Ads

Worse than traditional pop-up ads are the kind that appear as part of the Web page you're on, and they're even more annoying on mobile phones, where hunting for the "X" is like some twisted minigame. I'm aware of the irony that such methods could be paying my bills at some point. That doesn't mean they don't bother me when I'm browsing.

The Fix: I don't condone ad-blocking, due to the aforementioned bill-paying, but if you must, alternative Web browsers can help. The iPhone's Atomic Web Browser has an ad blocker built in that wipes away these pop-ups. Android's Dolphin browser has ad-blocking add-ons.
Filling Out Forms

Sometimes I wonder how many people avoid buying things or signing up for services because they hate filling out forms. On the cramped keyboards of mobile phones, it's even worse, especially when mobile browsers don't fill out information automatically.

The Fix: On the iPhone, mobile Safari actually does have a form auto-fill feature, but it's disabled by default. Head into the "Safari" section of your settings, then turn it on. You can even sync this feature with your contact information. For other phones, LastPass will remember passwords and form information, but costs $1 per month. Opera Mini doesn't fill out complete forms, but it saves passwords, at least.
Redirect Hell, Part 1

You're on Facebook or Twitter and someone links to what looks like the most interesting article ever--"Top 10 Most Questionable Gas Station Bathrooms," for example. So you get to the Website, but it just redirects you to the mobile version homepage instead of the specific URL you were trying to reach. So much for the convenience of neat and tidy mobile Websites!

The Fix: If you absolutely must see those bathrooms, try using the site's archives or a search function if it wasn't scrapped per annoyance number one. The story's got to be there somewhere. Otherwise, revert to the first fix and hit the link again. Alternatively, e-mail the story link to yourself for later reading on a PC.
Redirect Hell, Part 2

So you've passed through a mobile Website redirect unscathed, your link intact. Good luck returning, via the back button, to the site you were previously viewing. Mobile Web page redirects have a nasty habit of sending you forward every time you hit the back button. Granted that my conclusion is a conspiracy theory, but I say it's all part of the Website's plan to trap you forever.

The Fix: Option number one is to use brute force. Keep pounding that back button until you're back to safety. Failing that, you can go into the browser's history to find the previous page.

Accidental Tapping

The harsh reality of touch screens is that the actions of clicking and scrolling require contact from a finger. You're bound to mess up on occasion, clicking a link when you meant to drag, and vice versa.

The Fix: Not a fix, per se, but you can train yourself to avoid accidental tapping by always laying down a finger with a slight bit of motion, so it's not registered as a click instead. And try to tend more toward long, deliberate scrolling instead of quick flicks, which could register as taps.
This Site Isn't Appworthy

Digg page--click to zoomDear Website I Visit Maybe Four Times a Year: I'm impressed you have a native iPhone or Android app. Now please stop getting in my face as I try to navigate your Website. I'm looking at you, Digg, Village Voice, and Yelp.

The Fix: Some sites, like the ones mentioned above, will stop advertising their mobile apps for good if you take a moment to click the "close" button where the message appears. Otherwise, you could show disapproval by going to a competing service or Website, but if you switch to Google Places over Yelp simply out of spite, you've got a pretty big chip on your shoulder.
Picking Up Where You Left Off

During the day, my computer browser becomes an organized mess of tabs and open windows. But once I go mobile, all those stories I wanted to read or Websites I needed to reference are gone, unless I e-mail them to myself.

The Fix: This one's easy. Just check out the Xmarks service, which lets you send all open tabs on a PC to your mobile devices. iPhone users can get the native app for $1--an Android version is supposedly in the works--but there's also a general phone site at mobile.xmarks.com.

A 'Get Adobe Flash Player' notice on a mobile Website. The Flash Problem

Missing Flash support won't always be a problem for all phones, but with the exception of Android phones running the new Froyo mobile OS, most phones can reliably annoy their owners by displaying Websites filled with empty Flash boxes. Subannoyance: Why doesn't YouTube's mobile site let you watch full television episodes as you can on a desktop browser? I fret that it's because some Hollywood executive doesn't like the idea of me watching full episodes of Star Trek on YouTube from the road.

The Fix: "Get an Android phone" is admittedly not the best answer--well, it is if you think of phones as political factions. Meanwhile, iPhone owners can try a workaround and turn to LogMeIn Ignition ($30 in the iPhone App Store) to feed content from their own PCs, including Flash. Another workaround is to use the iPhone app called Cloud Browse (free, but with a premium version for faster speeds), which opens a Flash-enabled browser on the app's own server.
Ghost of the Mobile Website

One thing I despise more than bad Websites on mobile phones is bad mobile Websites on your PC. Sometimes this can happen if someone links to a site's mobile version, and there's no redirect to take you back. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, I feel helpless.

The Fix: With the benefit of a full Web browser, do a search within the Website's domain (for example, enter "site:domain.com 'the thing you're searching for'" in Google). That might get you back to the land of the living.

3 Temperature Monitor Software Notebook

Notebook nowadays has become the main weapon boost productivity for many people. Portable computing devices that are practical, because it is easy to carry and have an application that simply 'muscle' for the various activities of daily work.

One issue that always appears on the notebook is a matter of temperature. The form is solid, accompanied by heavy work, making tools that are often overheated. If you already see, the problem could be serious.

For example, excessive temperatures on the notebook can make the components in it fast is broken and does not last. Worst conditions, ranging from the hard drive 'melt' until the battery is popped.

Now, the application temperature monitoring can be useful to monitor the rising heat in laptop computers innards. By utilizing this application, users can see when the notebook showed symptoms of fever, so it can be done immediately to prevent or cure.

Here are three temperature monitoring application that quite often used, as suggested by the quoted MakeUseOf, Monday (07/19/2010):

RealTemp

Information on their site mentions, RealTemp is a temperature monitoring for computers with Intel processors. The software is reading the Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) on each core.

DTS reported how close the operational temperature of the maximum temperature allowed in the secure processor. Thus, the smaller this distance the operational meaning is more dangerous for your computer.

Yummy, this application does not need to be installed for use. Besides, he has a feature to test whether the DTS sensors that have a problem or not. RealTemp officially supports Windows 2000, XP and Vista (32bit and 64bit), while Windows 7 is not mentioned on its website.

CoreTemp

If you only read the Intel RealTemp, CoreTemp could be a choice for AMD users. Almost all kinds of Intel and AMD processors are supported by this application.

The application also measures the temperature on each core on multi-core processors are used. Any sensors that read the same, namely DTS sensor that is claimed to be more accurate than the thermal diode sensors.

One interesting feature is the ability to do logging, recording alias. With this the user can see the track record of processor temperature fluctuations during the period of time, the resulting data can be processed into a graph ciamik through spreadsheet applications like OpenOffice.org Calc or Microsoft Office Excel.

CoreTemp has supported operating system called Windows 7, in addition to Windows XP and Vista, of course. There are few records, for AMD Phenom CoreTemp users will not actually display the absolute temperature.

SpeedFan

Slightly different from the two applications above, SpeedFan promising the ability to measure the temperature of the motherboard and hard drive. According to information on its site, this application will read the temperature of the motherboard and hard drive, read the voltage and fan speed and monitor the status of your hard drive.

SpeedFan also includes the ability adjust the fan speed. Depending on needs, this notebook can be used to create more 'quiet' or boost the fan to work out the heat faster.

SpeedFan running on operating systems Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Vista (including Vista 64bit). Not stated his support for Windows 7.

We're running out of internet addresses

(CNN) -- Don't panic, but we're running out of internet addresses.

Not domain names -- those website names that you see at the top of this page and which always start with some semblance of "http://" and "www."

We've got plenty of those.

But, according to statements from prominent internet thinkers this week, we may run out of internet protocol -- or IP -- addresses in less than a year.

IP addresses are numbers assigned to all of the devices -- computers, phones, cars, wireless sensors, etc. -- that log on to the internet.

According to the blog ReadWriteWeb, the internet is changing and evolving so quickly -- with so many new types of devices connecting -- that we're running out of numbers to assign to all of these Web-enabled electronics.

"The main reason for the concern? There's an explosion of data about to happen to the Web thanks largely to sensor data, smart grids, RFID and other Internet of Things data," Richard MacManus writes on that site.

"Other reasons include the increase in mobile devices connecting to the Internet and the annual growth in user-generated content on the Web."

Only 4 billion internet addresses are possible under the current system, and those will all be exhausted in less than a year, John Curran, president and CEO of the American Registry for Internet Numbers, told ReadWriteWeb.

In a recent statement on YouTube, internet luminary and Google exec Vinton Cerf makes a similar prediction.

"We are at a cusp, I think, in the IP address space for internet," he said, noting that, if nothing changes, a "black market" for these internet addresses may develop.

So what should we do about this numbers shortage?

Well, make more numbers for starters.

Our current system for assigning IP addresses, which look like a series of four numbers with periods between them, can only handle 32 bits of data.

But, to accommodate the sprawling nature of the Web, internet researchers are working on a new version of the system -- called IPv6, for "version six" -- which would allow many more IP addresses, with each holding 128 bits of info.

On The Atlantic's website, Alexis Madrigal writes that the situation is somewhat similar to what phone companies faced in the 1980s and 1990s: We ran out of new phone numbers, so we had to add digits.

"The problem is essentially the same: you only have so many unique slots, and those slots eventually run out as phone numbers proliferate," he writes.

But the current situation has proven more technically complicated than that.

Researchers have been working on IPv6 for more than a decade, but according to reports on the matter, adoption has been slow.

Now, some writers are comparing the situation to Y2K. They say we need to act now to shift to the new system or the internet might stop working.

Madrigal, for one, says he's optimistic the internet won't break because of a lack of IP address numbers.

"There are undoubtedly a swarm of issues leading to IPv6 underdeployed," he writes. "But that's actually good news because it means there will be plenty of ways to fix the problem when everyone swings into action."

Is 'cloud computing' the future of video games?

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Playing high-profile video games quickly from portable devices such as your iPad might get easier after this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

While the E-3 "game changer" tag has been reserved largely for innovations such as 3-D and motion-sensor systems, several companies hope using cloud computing to store games will be the real shift by letting gamers play high-end titles anywhere, on almost any machine.

If fully realized, they say, cloud gaming could be a console killer.

Gaming company OnLive announced Tuesday that it will make 23 popular console games, including "Assassin's Creed II," "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and "Mass Effect 2," available through an online subscription service.

"Today we're taking the first step toward a future where video game content is increasingly free from the restrictions of device and location, while showcasing the ability to instantly play the latest, most advanced games at the touch of a button," said OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman.

Cloud gaming uses rapid data compression to let users store their games "in the cloud" -- on Web servers -- and then pull them down and play them using a regular Web browser. It's the same concept as storing photos on a site such as Flickr or music videos on a MySpace page.

The user doesn't actually have those files on any one particular computer but can access them from anywhere.

OnLive has partnerships with gaming companies such as Electronic Arts, UbiSoft and Warner Bros. Interactive and announced several new ones, including Sega, on Tuesday. More titles were expected to be available as they are released.

OnLive's service, which launches Thursday, will offer free subscription for a year. OnLive has not announced what fees will be beyond that, but a spokesperson said Wednesday they will be "much less" than $15 a month.

OnLive isn't the only one in the cloud-gaming business though. Rival Gaikai announced this year it had raised $10 million for a streaming game service that will let users sample games before buying them.

"[W]e host the games, we run them, we worry about hardware and software updates, and we stream them to you," Gaikai said on its website. "The only thing you need is a browser and an internet connection."

Also at E3, Sony announced PlayStation Plus, an online subscription service that expands its PlayStation Network.

Launching on June 29, the pay service will offer gamers a chance to play exclusive and preview versions of top games, ramping up Sony's bid to compete with the Xbox Live network from Microsoft.

A 90-day subscription to the service will cost $17.99 and will go for about $50 a year.

And billionaire Sir Richard Branson made the space even more interesting Tuesday with the rollout of a revamped Virgin Games -- an online home for competitive console gamers.

The subscription site will host top-line games that gamers would typically buy for themselves.

"With Virgin Gaming, we're offering members more than just a place to compete. We're offering them the best, safest and most secure online experience with the fresh, fun approach Virgin is known for," said Rob Segal, CEO of Virgin Gaming.

In his typical, bigger-than-life style, Branson pulled up at E3 in an armored car purportedly carrying $1 million -- representing the total payout for a series of cash prizes Virgin will pay in competitive tournaments hosted on the site.

The cloud-computing concept had insiders talking at E3 -- which started Tuesday and runs through Thursday. But not everyone in the tech community is sold just yet.

Some question whether gamers, who presumably already have at least one gaming console, will pony up again for the ability to play their favorite titles from the cloud.

"Even if it costs less to rent or play a game -- and it probably will ... OnLive will have a tough time competing with actual hardware for all but the most dedicated gamers," Jared Newman wrote on the

AT&T fixes major iPad 3G security hole

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- AT&T said late Wednesday that it has fixed a security hole that may have allowed hackers to access the e-mail addresses of more than 100,000 iPad 3G owners.

The announcement came shortly after tech and gossip blog Gawker posted an expose of the breach. A hacker group used a vulnerability on AT&T's website to harvest the e-mail addresses iPad buyers provided to activate their devices, which went on sale barely more than a month ago.

The result was a glitzy who's who list of iPad early adopters, which includes major political figures, military officials and top politicians. Rahm Emanuel, the chief of staff for President Obama, was among the iPad users whose e-mail address was exposed, according to Gawker. Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg were also on the hit list.

Without commenting on the vast scope of the alleged hack, AT&T acknowledged taking action to fix a security hole.

The company was informed Monday by a business customer about the "possible exposure" of their iPad ICC IDs, a unique identification number used to link devices with their owners.

"This issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and was corrected by Tuesday," AT&T (T, Fortune 500) spokesman Mark Siegel said in a prepared statement. "We have essentially turned off the feature that provided the e-mail addresses."

Siegel said e-mail addresses were the only information that could have been exposed as a result of the glitch. He said AT&T is continuing to investigate the problem and will inform all customers who may have been affected.

"At this point, there is no evidence that any other customer information was shared," Siegel said.

An engineer for "Goatse Security," the hacker outfit that discovered the AT&T hole and alerted Gawker about its data harvest, told CNNMoney.com that Gawker's account of the breach is accurate. He declined to comment further.

Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), which sold more than two million iPads since the device debuted on April 3, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ofcom unveils anti-piracy policy

Lists of Britons who infringe copyright are to be drawn up by the UK's biggest ISPs, under proposals from the regulator Ofcom.

The plan is contained in a draft code of practice it hopes will curb copyright infringement.

Names and the number of times individuals infringe will be logged.

Music firms and movie studios can request details from the list so that they can decide whether to start their own action against serial infringers.

However, any suspected infringers will be sent three warning letters before any action can be taken.

The letters will contain "easy to understand information on the nature of the allegations made against the subscriber and on what actions a subscriber can take, both to challenge the allegation and to protect their network from being hijacked for the purposes of infringement."

Jim Killock, executive director of the advocacy body the Open Rights Group (ORG) said the proposals left "huge unanswered questions".

The ORG joined forces with the Communications Consumer Panel Consumer Focus, Which and Citizens Advice to draw up a set of principles they believe should govern the code of practice.

The principles say sound evidence is needed before any action is taken and consumers must have the right to defend themselves.

"It is imperative that a system that accuses people of illegal online activity is fair and clear," said Anna Bradley, chair of the Communications Consumer Panel.,
Appeals process

The code initially only applies to big ISPs but could be extended, even to mobile networks, if infringement on smaller networks grows.

It tells ISPs under what circumstances they should inform customers that their accounts are allegedly being used to pirate copyrighted material.

Ofcom said the code should come into force in early 2011. The call for the creation of the code is contained in the controversial Digital Economy Act (DEA).

One of the most controversial elements of that act was its granting of powers to the Secretary of State to disconnect people or slow their connections if they ignore warnings.

However, the code says: "The Secretary of State has not indicated his intention to make use of these provisions at this time and this consultation is not concerned with this aspect of the DEA."

Technical measures such as these would require further legislation and Parliamentary approval.

Initially the code will only apply to ISPs that have more than 400,000 customers. This includes BT, Talk Talk, Virgin Media, Sky, Orange, O2 and the Post Office.

An independent appeals process will also be set up for those customers who believe they have been wrongly accused of copyright infringement.

Ofcom has begun a consultation exercise on the proposals which will conclude on 30 July.

The communications watchdog said the code would go alongside other work to educate customers about copyright infringement, promotion of legal alternatives to file-sharing networks and targeted action against the most persistent offenders.

iPhone finder regrets his 'mistake'

(WIRED) -- The person who found and sold an Apple iPhone prototype says he regrets not doing more to return the device to its owner, according to a statement provided by his attorney Thursday in response to queries from Wired.com.
Brian J. Hogan, a 21-year-old resident of Redwood City, California, says although he was paid by tech site Gizmodo, he believed the payment was for allowing the site exclusive access to review the phone. Gizmodo emphasized to him "that there was nothing wrong in sharing the phone with the tech press," according to his attorney Jeffrey Bornstein.
Wired.com identified Hogan as the finder of the prototype by following clues on social network sites, and then confirmed his identity with a source involved in the iPhone find.
Hogan has been interviewed by law enforcement investigators but has not been charged with a crime. His attorney says he is willing to cooperate with authorities.
It's generally considered theft under California law if one "finds lost property under circumstances that give him knowledge of or means of inquiry as to the true owner" and yet appropriates the property for his own use "without first making reasonable and just efforts to find the owner and to restore the property to him."
The person who found the phone "is very definitely one of the people who is being looked at as a suspect in theft," San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe told Wired.com Wednesday. "Assuming there's ultimately a crime here. That's what we're still gauging, is this a crime, is it a theft?"
On April 19, Gizmodo, which is owned by Gawker Media, published a bombshell story about the iPhone prototype, which had apparently been left at the Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City. It was left behind by an Apple engineer named Gray Powell.
According to the statement from his lawyer, Hogan was in the bar with friends when another patron handed him the phone after finding it on a nearby stool. The patron asked Hogan if the phone belonged to him, and then left the bar. Hogan asked others sitting nearby if the phone belonged to them, and when no one claimed it, he and his friends left the bar with the device.
"Brian opened the phone onto a Facebook page but then the phone shut down," attorney Bornstein writes. "From that time on, the phone was inoperable the entire time Brian had it."
Hogan didn't know what he had until he removed a fake cover from the device and realized it must be a prototype of Apple's upcoming next-generation iPhone, according to Gizmodo's account of the find.
A friend of Hogan's then offered to call Apple Care on Hogan's behalf, according to Hogan's lawyer. That apparently was the extent of Hogan's efforts to return the phone.
After the friend's purported efforts to return the phone failed, several journalists were offered a look at the device. Wired.com received an e-mail March 28 -- not from Hogan -- offering access to the iPhone, but did not follow up on the exchange after the tipster made a thinly veiled request for money. Gizmodo then paid $5,000 in cash for it.
The owners of the bar told reporters that Hogan didn't notify anyone who worked at the bar about the phone. They also said Powell returned several times after losing the phone to see if anyone had found it and turned it in. Powell and Apple's outside counsel contacted the San Mateo County District Attorney's office last week to report the phone stolen, according to reports.
"He regrets his mistake in not doing more to return the phone," says Bornstein's statement. "Even though he did obtain some compensation from Gizmodo, Brian thought that it was so that they could review the phone."
Shortly after Gizmodo published its story, people identifying themselves as representatives of Apple appeared at Hogan's home seeking permission to search the premises, according to a source involved with the iPhone find. A roommate turned them away.
Records show a Redwood City address for Hogan about a mile from the bar where he found the phone. Nobody was at home when Wired.com knocked on the door earlier this week. Hogan previously lived in Santa Barbara, where he attended Santa Barbara City College as recently as 2008, according to his Facebook profile, which was deleted last week.
His attorney says he recently transferred schools and will resume his college education in the fall. He has been working part time at a church-run community center giving swimming lessons to children and volunteered at a Chinese orphanage last year while he was enrolled in a study-abroad program.
"He also volunteers to assist his aunt and sister with fundraising for their work to provide medical care to orphans in Kenya," his attorney says. "Brian is the kind of young man that any parent would be proud to have as their son."
In addition to Hogan, investigators have targeted Gizmodo editor Jason Chen, who received and reported on the phone. Last Friday, officers from California's Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team raided Chen's Fremont, California, home and seized computers and other equipment.
Gawker Media and others have said the search warrant violated state and federal shield laws protecting journalists from searches and seizures without a subpoena. The San Mateo County district attorney's office said this week that investigators will not examine the seized materials until the legality of the warrant has been resolved.
Hogan's attorney, Jeffrey Bornstein, is a former federal prosecutor, who is now a partner at the San Francisco law firm K & L Gates. As a defense attorney, Bornstein notably represented the captain who steered a container ship into the San Francisco Bay Bridge in 2007.
In an interview at his office Thursday afternoon, the lawyer said Hogan's family has relocated to an undisclosed location in anticipation of a media frenzy. "This thing has gotten completely, completely out of control," said Bornstein, referring to the public interest in the story.
"He made a mistake," Bornstein added. "He should have just immediately turned that phone in."

Apple expected to unveil new iPhone in June

(Wired) -- Apple on Wednesday announced the dates of its Worldwide Developers Conference, where the company is expected to introduce a new iPhone (even though tech blog Gizmodo may have spoiled the surprise).
Taking place June 7 to June 11 at San Francisco's Moscone West, the five-day conference includes hands-on sessions for software developers to become familiar with iPhone OS 4 and Mac OS X.
In previous WWDC events, Apple has announced new products during a keynote presentation that kicks off the conference.
Apple has announced new iPhones during both WWDC 2008 and WWDC 2009, so we expect the introduction of a fourth-generation iPhone. Because the conference is software-centric, we can also expect more details about the next iPhone operating system, iPhone OS 4, which was previewed in early April.
Meanwhile, the tech community is still bubbling with a mixture of excitement and anger over Gizmodo's publication of a lost iPhone prototype, which many believe is a near-final version of the fourth-generation iPhone.

Apple engineer Gray Powell reportedly left the iPhone in a bar, which was retrieved by an individual who later sold the device to Gizmodo. The tech blog published photos and videos of the device and later returned it to Apple.
Police have since launched an investigation on the case of the missing iPhone, which involved raiding the house of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen and seizing his electronic equipment -- an action whose validity is being disputed.
Wired.com reported Tuesday that police have identified the finder of the phone, but a name has not yet been disclosed to the public.

In the tech world, porn quietly leads the way

(CNN) -- It was just days after the release of the iPad -- Apple's slate computer heralded as a tool for gaming, book and magazine reading and Web consumption -- when the announcement arrived.
One of the world's biggest porn companies claimed it had created a way to stream its videos onto the device, skipping the Apple store and its restrictions on salacious content.

The announcement illustrates a widely acknowledged but seldom-spoken truth of the technology world: Whenever there's a new content platform, the adult-entertainment industry is one of the first to adopt it -- if they didn't help create it in the first place.
"It's not necessarily that the porn industry comes up with the ideas, but there's a huge difference in any technology between the idea and the successful application," said Jonathan Coopersmith, a professor at Texas A&M University who teaches the history of technology.
"They're kind of the shock troops, and one of the nice things for them is that they can claim, 'Hey, I'm advancing technology.' "
While the shadowy nature of the adult-entertainment industry makes exact figures hard to nail down, it's generally acknowledged that porn was the first product to make money on the Internet and still rakes in upward of $1 billion annually online.
[Although porn, like many industries, has felt the pinch of the last couple year's recession, leading Hustler's Larry Flynt and others to jokingly ask for a federal bailout].
From the printing press to instant cameras, from pay-per-view to VCRs, pornographers -- both professional and private -- have been among the quickest to jump on board with newly developed gadgets.
The first public screening of a movie was in 1895. Less than two years later, Coopersmith notes, the first "adult" film was released.
"The classic example is the VCR," said Oliver Marc Hartwich, an economist and senior fellow with Centre for Independent Studies, a conservative Australian think tank. "When it was introduced, Hollywood was nervous because the big studios feared piracy. They were even considering suing the VCR producers.
"Not so the adult industry. They saw it as a big new market and seized the opportunity."
On the internet, streaming video, credit-card verification sites, Web referral rings and video technology like Flash all can be traced back to innovations designed to share, and sell, adult content.
iReport: Porn and the economy
Experts attribute much of the success of AOL, the social networking forbearer of sites like Facebook and Twitter, to its private chat rooms -- and anyone who remembers scanning the user-created chats remembers the adults-only nature of many of them.
Websites that require memberships, encryption coding, speedier file-sharing technology -- all can trace their roots back to the adult industry.
These days, in addition to the race for the iPad screen, at least a couple of porn flicks are in production using burgeoning 3-D technology. While Hollywood has scored with a few blockbusters, 3-D tech for the television is still in its infancy -- and porn, as always, is right there to capitalize.
"Just imagine that you'll be watching it as if you were sitting beside the bed," Hong Kong-based producer Stephen Shiu Jr. said of his movie, "3D Zen and Sex," which is set to begin filming this month with a budget of nearly $4 million. "There will be many close-ups. It will look as if the actresses are only a few centimeters from the audience."
For adult-entertainment companies, staying on the cutting edge of technology can be necessary to survive.
Ilan Bunimovitz is the CEO of Private Media Group, the company that announced the iPad porn offering, which uses cloud computing to store a customer's videos.
In effect, he's saying it's like an iTunes for porn -- an online service that lets users buy and access a personal collection of adult videos via their iPads. Of course, the slate computer's browser can already be used to surf the internet for adult content.
He said his company, with its 25-member technology department, began working on ways to take advantage of theiPad the day it was announced in January. By the time Apple released the device in early April, the system was ready, he said.
"Every step of the way, when there's a new technology, we explore it," said Bunimovitz. "In the adult business, many times the traditional venues are not available to us, so we have to be innovative to get our content to the consumer.
"With adult content, you need to create your own solutions."
Porn companies can capitalize on the latest technological advances because of their deep pockets and the relative certainty that their investments will be returned by customers willing to pony up for their product, experts say.
"People are willing to pay a premium for pornography," said Coopersmith, the Texas A&M professor. "You see this with movies, with VCRs -- which is when it first really became noticeable. DVDs, computer games, cable TV -- if you look at the price of those [adult] products, they're higher profit margins for the vendors."
That fact creates a conundrum for product developers. Often, any new product's pornographic potential remains a dirty little secret -- privately discussed by the manufacturer but left unspoken in public.
One of Coopersmith's favorite examples is the early days of instant cameras. Manufacturers were fully aware how many customers would use a camera that didn't require you to go to the local pharmacist to have your film developed, he said.
One of the earliest was Polaroid's provocatively named camera, "The Swinger" -- ostensibly so-called because of a strap that let it dangle from the user's wrist.
In a television ad, a young man uses it to photograph a bevy of gyrating, bikini-clad models before eventually picking one to walk off into the sunset -- with only the camera between them.
"One of the silent slogans of the porn-tech world is 'Don't ask. Don't tell. Do sell," Coopersmith said. "You don't want to be public, but you've got your own private corporate plans."
"As for the future, Bunimovitz says he doesn't expect his industry to back away from the cutting edge of technology. He's currently intrigued with the potential of artificial intelligence, which he said one day might simulate a live porn star who could "interact" with the user.
"There's always something new," he said. "At any point in time, we'll be working on new initiatives. Some of them will flop and some of them will be big -- but there's always something in the works."

Top ten BlackBerry apps

Essential apps for your BlackBerry from BlackBerry App World

Still in relative infancy, RIM's app store has grown to an impressive 5,000 available apps in less than a year. A wide variety of both paid for and free applications, RIM's Front Page Carousel is updated regularly showcasing a selection of featured apps, or skip straight to the Top Downloads chart to see which are the most popular. By recommending apps to friends and posting your own user reviews, BlackBerry App World is already creating a real community feel.

Social Networking: BLACKBERRY MESSAGING (RIM/Free)
Specifically designed by RIM this is the best instant messaging service for BlackBerry users. Of course it only works between BlackBerry to BlackBerry, but users will be able to enjoy a desktop like IM experience between one another. There's also the ability to indulge in group chats, while you can change your availability status letting other users know whether you're reachable or not.

Camera: (SALE) PHOTO ALBUM AND DIARY (YadaHome.com/$3.99)Create a multitude of albums with the aid of this photo app. The Photo Album and Diary application enables you to add notes and titles to any number of albums you choose to correct. Photos within the albums can be viewed as thumbnails helping you find specific shots with ease. However, our favourite aspect of this app is the fact that you can send an entire album in one single email, making it a breeze to transfer photos to your computer as well as freeing up some much needed memory on your BlackBerry.

Music: 7DIGITAL (DevelopIQ/Free)
Turn your BlackBerry into the ultimate jukebox with the 7Digital app. Peruse the charts, listening to samples of the latest floor bangers. Find something you like and download the DRM-free MP3 tracks direct to your phone. You'll also be able to transfer any MP3's to the phone and play them on 7Digital's integrated MP3 player.

Sat Nav: TELMAP NAVIGATOR (TelMap Direct Ltd./£34.85)
We might have some concerns regarding the size of BlackBerry screens for them to be a true sat nav replacement (though the Storm2 does sport a 3.25-inch), but TelMap Navigator is good enough to rescind some of these reservations. Geared towards both the driver and pedestrian, take a wrong turn and TelMap will quickly re-route getting you to your destination in the quickest possible way. With its keyword facility simply type in 'burger' for a list of local hamburger joints.

Lifestyle: URBANSPOON (Wanderspot/Free)
An app for the indecisive. Akin to a one armed bandit, the UrbanSpoon's slot machine needs to be spun before it makes suggestions of good restaurants based on your current location. Of course if you're not in the mood for letting the food gods decide, you can also use your BlackBerry's GPS and manually search for a nearby restaurant by cuisine, location or price.

Utility: PAYPAL (PayPal/Free)As BlackBerry App World requires PayPal for any paid for applications, this is a near essential app. PayPal is one of the securest ways of making online payments, but it's also a great tool for transferring money to other accounts. Not only does it provide piece of mind, its reputation is so good that it has close ties to other recognised sites such as eBay.

Location based: ATM HUNTER (MasterCard/Free)
This app got us out of a right jam recently when we ran out of cab money. Find the nearest cash points with this location based app. Either use your current location or manually type in an address and the nearest ATM's to you will be displayed. A real godsend when you're frantically walking the street s with no cash in your wallet.

Travel: WORLDMATE LIVE (WorldMate/Free)
A must for all jetsetters, the WorldMate Live app will ensure you don't miss that important flight, arriving at your destination fully prepared. With all your travel details stored in one place, you'll have instant access to your itineraries, a currency convertor and all the latest weather information. What's more splash the cash for the gold membership and you'll receive real-time flight status updates from over 350 airlines.

Work: XOBNI (Xobni Corporation/ From $9.99)Already renowned for their emailing abilities, this messaging index app will further improve your BlackBerry's messaging capabilities. As an Outlook plug-in Xobni ('inbox' backwards) collates all communication you've had from one contact into one view. It also cleverly extracts additional contact information from the email, giving you the option to call or text them even if they aren't in your contacts book, while you can search for particular emails with the keyword search. Providing the contact has used the same email address, Xobni will also sync the contact with their LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Sport: GYM TECHNIK (TSR Gym Technik Ltd./Free)
If you're anything like us, we lift a few weights at the gym but basically have no idea what we're doing or how we should be doing it. The Gym Technik app is like your own personal trainer, providing virtual guides of how to curl those barbells without injuring yourself, while also recording and monitoring your progress. What's more if it all gets too much, you can always tell it to bog off, something you might not be brave enough to do to an actual personal trainer.
