Because of Android, Google sued Oracle

VIVAnews - boom growth in the global competition Android smart phone operating system to make Oracle also be tempted.

As quoted from InformationWeek, Oracle last week sued Google, claiming besutannya operating system, Android violate some copyrights associated with Java.

Oracle accuses Google of violating seven patents owned by Oracle. "In the development of Android, Google know directly and repeatedly violated the intellectual property relating to Java which is owned by Oracle. The lawsuit is seeking a proper solution of this offense," said Karen Tillman Oracle spokesperson was quoted as saying from InfoWorld.

Since Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems valued at U.S. $ 5.6 billion in January, Oracle also took over the rights to various technologies previously developed by Sun, including Java, MySQL, and OpenOffice.

However, Oracle said, Java is one of the most valuable property from the acquisition. Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said that he wanted to develop more Oracle Java applications for mobile phones and netbooks.

As reported by EconomicTimes, IDC analyst Al Hilwa said that Oracle's Java Micro Edition license its technology to several companies, including handset makers Nokia and Motorola, so the technology that provides added value to Oracle.

However, most Java ME licenses are usually only used by lower-class phones, smart phones instead. Along with the growth of smart phones, Oracle also like to take part in this segment. Android itself, could be one of the most successful consumer device that uses Java.

While Google is headed by Eric Schmidt (previously had served as Chief Technology Officer of Sun) rejected Oracle's claims.

"Open-source Java community has stepped so far beyond any companies and working every day to make the web a better place. We will of course maintain our standards and open source will continue to work in this industry to develop the Android platform," said spokesman Google Aaron Zamost, told Computerworld.

As quoted from InfoWorld, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney said, when Google developed Android, Google includes a Java-compatible technology called Dalvik, into Android. Dalvik developed as a version of "clean room" of Java.

This means that Google built it from scratch without the use of technology and intellectual property owned by any Sun. "You can not just take the application of Sun's Java application that has been licensed. You got to compile it again to Dalvik," Dulaney said.

Dalvik, Dulaney said, only one of the options to create applications for Android applications. The developers also can use the HTML5 and language C. However, Dalvik also used in some of the core Android applications, like email.

Dulaney predicted Oracle's motive is to sue Google Android in the smartphone market success. "Now they have the Sun and they want to collect royalties from programming languages," said Dulaney.

Windows Phone 7 are considered some circles, including the OS obsolete when compared with Apple and Android. Section, interface and OS over Windows Mobile formerly were considered not to follow developments.

According to analyst Rob Enderle Redmon, Microsoft still has the opportunity to regain smart phone market, although likely to occur berlahan until 2015.

Fortunately, some vendors such as HTC, Samsung, LG, Dell, and Asus are still willing to pin this OS in its products. Thousands of mobile Windows Phone ready prototype produced by a number of vendors giants.

Yahoo! Messenger 10

Yahoo has long trailed AIM (Free, ) and Windows Live Messenger (Free, ) when it comes to the size of its IM user base, but the company nevertheless keeps beefing up its client software with unique features, like plugins and calling to outside phones. Yahoo benefits from its dominant webmail position, as you can chat with Yahoo contacts using Messenger from within the e-mail page. Yahoo! Messenger 10 (free) client is a force to be reckoned with—as long the people you want to chat with are on it.

Installation
When you install Yahoo! Messenger (it's a 22MB download), a large dialog box presents you pre-checked options for setting Yahoo as your browser home page, search engine, and installing Yahoo BrowserPlus, which lets you drag and drop files onto Flickr (Free, ) and Yahoo! Mail (Free, ). The Yahoo Toolbar can't even be deselected unless you click the Custom Install link! I'd prefer a less baggage-laden installer. AIM 7.3 is more up front, giving you the option not to install the junk from the main wizard

Next, you get an option that lets you import contacts from AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Orkut, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, and others (including cable addresses like Comcast and Optimum). Noticeably missing are Facebook (Free, ) and MySpace (Free, ). Unlike AIM 7.3, Digsby, and soon Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger 10 doesn't work directly with Facebook IM. It doesn't talk with Google Talk either, which mostly lives inside Gmail. It does, however connect with Windows Live Messenger contacts, but you won't get advanced features like audio and video chat.

The Buddy List
Yahoo does a decent job of combining contacts and social updates in a standard narrow buddy window. You can choose a compact or detailed view with buddy images—it's better than AIM 7.3's one-size-fits-all approach but doesn't afford as much control as Windows Live Messenger. But, unlike the buddy list of just about every other IM client on earth, Yahoo by default shows all your contacts whether they're online or offline; others hide the latter. Yahoo! Messenger lets you sign in as invisible, a nice privacy touch not available in third-party clients.

Another difference: Yahoo doesn't pop out a contact card whenever you hover over a contact entry—instead, the buddy icon glows and shows an arrow you can click to pop out the contact card, which is less distracting than other IM software. From the card, you can start audio or video chats with a buddy, send an SMS, and even call his phone.

Like the new AIM 7.3 buddy list, Yahoo! Messenger 10 has a separate tab showing social network updates, though Yahoo gets by with just two tabs rather than AIM's three. While you can link to all the usual social network suspects, you'll only see updates from Yahoo contacts who have mutually agreed to share updates and have accounts with the social networks. I prefer how the other IM clients let you see all your updates from all your Facebook friends.

Yahoo's Stealth Settings offer the most flexibility in terms of letting you choose how you want to appear online. A simple right click lets you permanently hide from a contact or just for the current session. AIM lets you block buddies, but sometimes that's overkill. In another privacy protection, you can't just start chatting with someone simply because you know their username; you have to send an invitation that your target chatter must accept. This is designed to prevent unwanted messages, but I still get more spam chat requests from Yahoo than other services.

Yahoo's buddy list has another unique ability; it can incorporate plug-ins. These add Yahoo services such as Music, Weather, Calendar, Finance, and an eBay watcher. The widgets can collapse at the bottom of the slim buddy window, so they don't take up lots of space. You can also hide them completely. If you really like a plug-in, you can send it to friends. Thirteen plug-in choices were built into my installation, and dozens more are available on the Yahoo Messenger website

Smartphone So Main Targets Hackers

LAS VEGAS - Security experts warned that if the software is currently being launched hacker attacks to your smartphone.

"Smartphones are private goods in which all believers to store data in it. This is a potential target for hackers," said Founder and CEO of Lookout Mobile Security John Hering, as quoted by the Straits Times, Saturday (31/07/2010).

According to Hering, other than trust the smartphone as critical data storage, users will also no longer have to download the suspicion of foreign applications into it. It is increasingly easier hacker to infiltrate.

"The device used is not just smartphones but mobile PC that is used to access such an important account of mobile banking or online trading service. These data are interesting for 'transported' by a hacker," said Hering.

Mobile phone users are rarely far away from smartphones because the data consist of a number of contacts, information, internet, banking, shopping. navigation and others, who are protected only by password.

"All of smartphone users would prefer to download a general application and never think about security," said Hering.

Lookout itself concluded that this data is based on studies done to your smartphone applications 300 000. According to them, most applications are often dig out more information than is needed.

Sure, Windows 7 is much faster than slowpoke Vista, but there's still room for improvement. Here are a dozen tricks to that can make Windows 7 faster.

One of the main virtues of Windows 7 is its speed—especially when compared with its predecessor, Vista. But most people haven't experienced the 15-second boot for the operating system that Microsoft engineers were shooting for. And there are certainly times when Windows you'll still see that spinning blue donut. We can always hope that the upcoming Windows 7 SP1 will include some performance tweaks, but, in the meanwhile, there are plenty of things you can do to speed up your installation of Windows 7.

The problem with most "speed-up Windows 7" stories is that they tell you to turn off some of the operating system's more charming visual features. The first nine of my dozen tips show you ways you can speed up your Windows 7 system without compromising its appearance. For those who need even more speed or don't care about eye candy, I've listed three at the end that boost system performance at the expense of some visual effects.

The slideshow below shows a dozen ways to speed up a slow PC. If you have your own tips for speeding up Windows 7, post your suggestions in the Talkback section below.

Accessing Applications Hidden On Nokia N900

OVI's Store has been providing a variety of applications for the Nokia N900. Unfortunately the number is still very small. Actually there are a variety of hidden applications on the Maemo platform. How do I activate it?

Various applications can be accessed hidden by activating the Maemo repository. No need to bother, all already exist in the Application Manager. Users can also download it directly from the phone.

Steps should be done is to add some new catalogs that exist in the Application Manager. To add a user needs to go to Menu> Application Manager.

In the Application Manager, there are three icons: Uninstall, Download, and Update. Now, to add a new catalog select the Application Manager menu in the middle of the top, then select the Application Catalog.

Some catalog options will appear. What we are doing is adding three new catalog, which serves to open 'hidden closet' variety of new applications later.

Indonesia 5 Large Producing Countries in the World Virus

Indonesia not only as a country with internet users in the world is big enough. But Indonesia has also signed five large virus-producing countries in the world. Wow!

The fact is disclosed by Erwin Yovitanto, Product Manager Astrindo Starvision - Kaspersky Distributor for Indonesia when talking with detikINET in Palm d', Bandung, Friday (07/23/2010) evening.

"Indonesia has signed five major virus-producing country in the world," he said.

This fact is not really surprising. Section, the data released by the Ministry of Communications and Information (Communications and Informatics), the number of Internet users in Indonesia has reached 45 million.

"Yes, because internet users in Indonesia is quite large, the fair if the amount of virus produced is also large," he said.

Even so, he continued, the type of virus that was made by Indonesia does not include a malignant virus. Most of the viruses made in Indonesia only display messages or hide certain files. Not a virus that can be damaging.

"Ngga damage. More to the fad alone. Trying to make a virus. Indeed many kinds. But the average show only those words or certain messages or even hidden files. Yes, the only trouble was. No harm, "he said.

Predicate holds as one of the many countries making the virus, Indonesia became countries targeted cyber attacks. Data owned by Kaspersky, Indonesia in first quarter 2010 to 20 countries occupy a position which becomes the target of cyber criminals. Same period in the year before, Indonesia has not entered into 20 large. The data is based on an analysis of www.securelist.com

"In ASEAN, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines has always been a target of attack. Indonesia has recently entered the top 20. The countries most frequently targeted are China, Russia, India and the United States," he explained.

We're running out of internet addresses

(CNN) -- Don't panic, but we're running out of internet addresses.

Not domain names -- those website names that you see at the top of this page and which always start with some semblance of "http://" and "www."

We've got plenty of those.

But, according to statements from prominent internet thinkers this week, we may run out of internet protocol -- or IP -- addresses in less than a year.

IP addresses are numbers assigned to all of the devices -- computers, phones, cars, wireless sensors, etc. -- that log on to the internet.

According to the blog ReadWriteWeb, the internet is changing and evolving so quickly -- with so many new types of devices connecting -- that we're running out of numbers to assign to all of these Web-enabled electronics.

"The main reason for the concern? There's an explosion of data about to happen to the Web thanks largely to sensor data, smart grids, RFID and other Internet of Things data," Richard MacManus writes on that site.

"Other reasons include the increase in mobile devices connecting to the Internet and the annual growth in user-generated content on the Web."

Only 4 billion internet addresses are possible under the current system, and those will all be exhausted in less than a year, John Curran, president and CEO of the American Registry for Internet Numbers, told ReadWriteWeb.

In a recent statement on YouTube, internet luminary and Google exec Vinton Cerf makes a similar prediction.

"We are at a cusp, I think, in the IP address space for internet," he said, noting that, if nothing changes, a "black market" for these internet addresses may develop.

So what should we do about this numbers shortage?

Well, make more numbers for starters.

Our current system for assigning IP addresses, which look like a series of four numbers with periods between them, can only handle 32 bits of data.

But, to accommodate the sprawling nature of the Web, internet researchers are working on a new version of the system -- called IPv6, for "version six" -- which would allow many more IP addresses, with each holding 128 bits of info.

On The Atlantic's website, Alexis Madrigal writes that the situation is somewhat similar to what phone companies faced in the 1980s and 1990s: We ran out of new phone numbers, so we had to add digits.

"The problem is essentially the same: you only have so many unique slots, and those slots eventually run out as phone numbers proliferate," he writes.

But the current situation has proven more technically complicated than that.

Researchers have been working on IPv6 for more than a decade, but according to reports on the matter, adoption has been slow.

Now, some writers are comparing the situation to Y2K. They say we need to act now to shift to the new system or the internet might stop working.

Madrigal, for one, says he's optimistic the internet won't break because of a lack of IP address numbers.

"There are undoubtedly a swarm of issues leading to IPv6 underdeployed," he writes. "But that's actually good news because it means there will be plenty of ways to fix the problem when everyone swings into action."

Asus Tablet: Hello Android, Bye Windows?

Beyond Apple's iPad, the tablet computer market is a murky place inhabited largely by vaporware. While product announcements abound, few tablets are actually shipping. That's likely to change soon, however. The Dell Streak, for instance, will be available in late July, according to Dell's site. And various reports have HP and other hardware makers rolling out 20 or so slates this year.

Asus has set its sight on tablets too. In May it announced two devices: Eee Pad EP121, with a 12-inch touchscreen and Windows 7 Home Premium; and Eee Pad EP101TC, with a 10-inch touchscreen and Windows Embedded Compact 7 OS. But now it appears that Asus may ditch Windows Embedded on its smaller tablet and go with Google's Android OS instead, according to Netbook News.

The report, if true, makes good business sense for Asus. While Microsoft is fighting to keep its Windows Embedded mobile OS relevant in the 21st century--the company recently announced a new version for enterprise handheld devices--tablet manufacturers are clearly leaning toward Android, a development encouraged by the growing popularity of Google's mobile OS in the smartphone market. Business customers, many of whom already use Android phones, would likely be comfortable investing in tablets running a familiar OS.

For mobile workers, a tablet ecosystem dominated by Android-based devices has its pros and cons. The pros include a proven touchscreen OS designed expressly for portable computing, a large and growing Android Market with 70,000 apps (give or take a few), solid integration with Web-based productivity apps such as Google Docs, and the upcoming App Inventor tool that lets non-coders build their own programs.

The cons? The verdict is still out on how well Android tablets would play with business applications, many of which are made by Microsoft. Redmond has the upper hand here. Why should Microsoft strive to make Office, Exchange, and SharePoint work seamlessly with Android-based tablets, a move that could cripple the growth of Windows in the mobile market? Then again, if Windows 7 proves to be a clunky mismatch for slate devices--it is, after all, a desktop OS being retrofitted for touchscreens--Android would likely win another victory.

But which Android version is best for tablets? Android 3.0, rumored to debut in late 2010 or early 2011 with a revamped interface and support for higher-resolution displays, is a likely match for the Asus Eee Pad EP101TC and other devices of its ilk.

The migration of Android from smartphones to tablets may confuse both business and consumer buyers in the near future, however, particularly if mobile devices running Google's browser-based Chrome OS also debut next year. Indeed, the ever-ambitious Google may be offering too much of a good thing.

Windows Vista 11 Pillars of Failure

Although public attention is directed to Windows 7 (the next Windows version), it seems Vista has two different types of users. Users of the first kind are happy to use Vista without any complaints. The second kind (and more kinds of sounds in the computer industry) members are users who criticize and complain about any deficiencies that exist in the OS.

Most complaints over Vista due to the making of Vista that is less satisfying, and mistakes made Microsoft's marketing strategy. Some complaint is a reaction from anti-Microsoft movement who is not satisfied on the history, business strategy, tactics and false announcements Microsoft.

I am offended by the fake announcement Microosft, because there are times when you hurt for Microsoft who issued the promise - a promise which is totally excessive kept. In the case of Vista, they announced the three "pillars" for Vista, namely:

* WinFS - which promised filesystem merevolusioner way users interact with files on the computer
* Aero - a new look for Windows
* Indigo - components for interacting with web services

Vista only managed to give one of the three pillars mentioned above, namely Aero which requires sophisticated hardware and slow down computer performance. Still dealing with three pillars above, below are 11 reasons why Vista is not much liked:

1. Users are confused - since the beginning, users complained about the many versions of Vista were sold. Who needs all these variants? All it takes is one simple version (Home) and one version that has all the features (Pro). This confusion seems to occur because there is no Microsoft employees who understand the marketing strategy.
2. The size of the source code - are too large.
3. Components - the missing component. WinFS, the promised file system and one of the main pillars of Vista does not come with Vista. This filesystem development started in 1991, and has so far remained unresolved. Why?
4. Waster laptop batteries. This should be repaired with a separate source code and hybrid hard disk (HHD). But this time the user still must use the SSD is very expensive.
5. HHD - I am still upset about being told by the HD industry that the benefits of new generation of hard disk (HD) will "make all users move to Vista." This was announced two years ago, and until now still no sequel. My guess: not working properly, and yet that can solve this problem.
6. Stickers Vista capable bogus - campaign to "Windows Vista capable" Microsoft is a huge marketing failure. Many computers are sold with the sticker "Windows Vista capable" which turned out to not be able to operate Vista. 7. Driver is minimal. Quite surprising that all existing Windows drivers in XP are not compatible with Vista. What happened?
8. There is no consistent advice to users, and Microsoft does not intervene. Some people say that you should buy a new computer with Vista and not upgrade from XP, some say the upgrade should be done. Microsoft should create a special site that can test the computer from the internet and advises the user whether they should buy a new computer or upgrade.
9. XP mania. All people love XP, and want to keep this OS. This makes Vista look even worse. Moreover, a lot of reports saying that the user back to using XP after trying Vista.
10.Marketing of responsibility. Unlike the previous release of Windows versions, Microsoft is not much to market Vista. Although there are some posters and TV ads for Vista, Vista marketing can not be compared with the launch of several earlier versions, where they managed to get the attention of people around the world.
11.Performance - you were not supposed to release a new OS that was developed during more than four years with a worse performance than the previous OS. Performance should be a top priority.

Mozilla Patches 9 Firefox Bugs, Adds Plug-in Crash Protection

Mozilla on Tuesday patched nine vulnerabilities, six of them critical, in Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 3.5.

But rather than highlighting the security fixes in Firefox 3.6.4, the company instead emphasized the addition of crash protection, a move meant to keep the browser alive when popular plug-ins drop dead.

Updates to Firefox 3.6.4 and Firefox 3.5.10 fixed nine flaws for each version, although the total patch count came to 10 because two fixes affected only one of the pair.

Six of the nine vulnerabilities for each browser were rated "critical," Mozilla's highest threat ranking, indicating that hackers could use them to compromise a system running Firefox, then plant other malware on the machine.

Two were labeled "moderate," the second-lowest rating, while one was tagged as "low."

One of the critical flaws was reported to Mozilla by Nils, a German research who only goes by his first name.

Nils gained fame by winning cash prizes at the last two annual Pwn2Own hacking contests, sponsored by HP TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative bug bounty program.

Last March, Nils took home $10,000 by sidestepping DEP (data execution prevention) and ASLR (address space layout randomization) in Windows 7 to exploit the then-current Firefox 3.6.2.

It was Nils' second Pwn2Own victory; last year he grabbed $15,000 by exploiting not only Firefox, but also Safari and IE8.

Mozilla also marked a clutch of bugs in the browser and JavaScript engines as critical, although it only assumed the flaws could be exploited.

"Some of these crashes showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code," Mozilla said, using boilerplate language it often inserts into browser or JavaScript engine security advisories.

But Mozilla wanted all eyes on Firefox 3.6.4 for a different reason. "Results from our beta testing show Firefox 3.6.4 will significantly reduce the number of Firefox crashes experienced by users who are watching online videos or playing games," said Christian Legnitto, who oversees the Firefox releases, in a post to Mozilla's blog .

"When a plug-in crashes or freezes while using Firefox, users can enjoy uninterrupted browsing by simply refreshing the page," he said.

Firefox 3.6.4 currently recovers only from crashes of Adobe's Flash Player, Apple 's QuickTime and Microsoft 's Silverlight plug-ins, and is available only in Firefox for Windows and Linux . The company is still working on the feature, which it has dubbed "out of process plug-ins," or OOPP, for the Mac version.

Mozilla has had an eye on Flash for OOPP treatment because Adobe's software has been responsible for more Firefox crashes than any other plug-in, according to the company.

It has also worked other features into Firefox to deal with problems in that plug-in, and others. Last year, for example, Mozilla kicked off plug-in checking , a feature that determines whether a user is running an outdated, and possibly vulnerable, plug-in, by focusing on Flash.

A keystone of the "Lorenz" project -- a move by Mozilla to quickly add features to Firefox via regular security updates rather than waiting for bigger upgrades -- OOPP was designed as a stop-gap measure for Firefox 3.6 when work on the full-scale "Electrolysis" process separation project was shifted to Firefox 4 , a major update currently scheduled to ship by the end of 2010.

The addition of OOPP led to several delays of Firefox 3.6.4, which at one point was slated for an early May release, then pushed to June 1 and beyond.

Mozilla has no plans to add OOPP to the older Firefox 3.5 line, it said in an FAQ on the new crash protection feature .

Users can update to Firefox 3.6.4 by downloading the new edition or by selecting "Check for Updates" from the Help menu in the browser. Firefox 3.5 can obtain the patches by calling up the integrated update tool.
